ProtectED Reflections - The Evolution of Campus Security
On Thursday 1 October 2020 at 14.00 BST we held our fifth ProtectED Reflections webinar, The Evolution of Campus Security – Towards effective institutional security (and the benefits during Covid-19). This is the second in a series of ProtectED webinars on the theme "Safeguarding the Student Experience". These events are all related to specific aspects of the ProtectED Code of Practice — with today's webinar relating to the section "Core Institutional Safety & Security"
We were very pleased to welcome our speaker for this event: Trevor Jones — Head of security at the University of Salford, Chair of the Association of University Chief Security Officers (AUCSO) and Co-Founder of ProtectED.
Trevor was interviewed by Professor Caroline Davey, one of the founders and Directors of ProtectED.
Student safety and wellbeing is a key factor in both student retention and recruitment. Students (and their parents) are increasingly considering campus safety and security when choosing their prospective university. This is especially true for international students.
Caroline and Trevor discussed the evolving role of university security services over recent years, and the shift in focus from physical security, to a wider role in supporting student wellbeing and safeguarding the student experience. This has resulted in a broader range of skills being required of university security staff, including mental health support.
