ITV News - Violence against women a 'national emergency' as 81% say they feel unsafe walking in dark

The UK is struggling to address the sexual misconduct incidents against women and girls across the country and also on university campuses. Current figures are terrifying with as many as two million women and girls every year thought to be the victims of male violence, it is hardly surprising that the police are calling it a national emergency and comparing the threat level to terrorism.

The first nationwide report into the size of the problem has revealed one in 12 women in England and Wales have been affected, and with recorded offences growing by nearly 40% over the last five years, this is something that needs addressing now, as the true scale when you add in all the unreported incidents the statistics are horrifying.

UK universities were given guidance to tackle the this within their institutions, which some have embraced, but others are far from fulfilling the full guidance given, one thing is clear, this is a problem that is not going away. It will be interesting to see if any changes are demanded now the new government is in place.

Within our Code of Practice we have a whole instrument dedicated to the prevention of student harassment and sexual assault, universities need to look at their policies and prevention strategies to ensure this is something that declines. You can read the full article from ITV News here.  And please get in touch if you would like more information on our Code of Practice in this area, as you can now just apply for this as a stand alone area with us, as we are now modular.
